Join us on a cool, Fall day in November as we travel to Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu to visit a Québec cheese factory; have lunch in a local restaurant in the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu area and, then visit the monks at the Abbey in Saint-Benoit-du-Lac for a tour of the Abbey and their cheese shop. While at the Abbey we’ll also have some quiet time to be still and know the presence of God in the beautiful and majestic grounds and chapel of the Abbey.

Make it a day with friends and family and building community as we have a fun day out of Montreal together! Take in the country scenery as we travel through Québec and see the beautiful colours of Fall.

For more information or to book your seat, please call the office or speak to one of the clergy.

The Québec Cheese Trail

The Chapel at Saint-Benoît-du-Lac Abbey

Québec has always been a trailblazer in terms of cheese production in North America. In fact, the first cheesemaking school on the continent was opened in Québec, in Saint-Denis-de-Kamouraska, in 1881. In 1893, the Saint-Hyacinthe dairy school, known today as the Institut de technologie agroalimentaire (ITA), was opened. The ITA pioneered improvements in centrifugation, pasteurization, curdling and curd-cutting techniques. It also helped advance research in chemistry, bacteriology and nutrition. We will visit a cheese making factory to learn more about the cheese making process (and to sample some of Québec’s cheeses).

Saint-Benoît-du-Lac Abbey

The Abbey, founded in 1912, and located in the Eastern Townships near Magog, numbers a little more than fifty monks living under the Rule of Saint Benedict. Separated from the world, they seek God in the celebration of the liturgy of the Church, in private prayer nourished by meditation of the Bible and in manual as well as intellectual work. The monks produce various cheeses, ciders, sauces and jams which are all available for purchase in the abbey shop. Sales of these products help to sustain their ministry and work.
